Psychology of Genocide
"Very educated people prepare for genocides" [...] "By contrast, some very poor and uneducated people know to 'do the right thing.'"
This is a very interesting extract from the text as it contradicts what many people may think. People may think that with education prejudice and hatred should be less common as they learn that there is no reason to hate. People may also think that the undedicated people hate more as they never learned not to hate. However, the book is contradicting this as it says that people who are educated hate and the people who are uneducated do not hate. After reading and pondering over this quote, a conclusion that could be made is that the reason to why the book makes this claim is because of the type of education which people are taught in.
When going to school children learn about various cultures and crimes against humanity. With this students may start to develop a hate towards a type of people. This hate may lead to people preparing for genocides, however, the people who are uneducated do not learn about this. Therefore, as they do not learn about this they consider every human to be equal and when they see an injustice they understand that this is to be stopped. They could potentially feel no hate towards these people therefore, would always try and stop any injustice. Moreover, when a manipulative leader would take over, he may take control over the education system, in which he can ensure that students are taught to hate a certain race or religion in order for him to be able to conduct a genocide and have people to follow and support him which would also bring more supporters do to the need of people to be part of the norm. Therefore, as mentioned before, the uneducated are not exposed to these things which means that they will not be able to develop the same hate which other people did.
Education is not entirely what is taught in school, however people can continue to learn through the news and the internet. Therefore, when people will be able to learn more through this and could possibly find something or listen to something which could cause them to hate. However, the uneducated people also does not have access to this therefore, they will not be able to find something which could cause them to hate. Therefore, educated people may prepare for genocides due to the type of education which they receive while the uneducated people may "do the right thing" as since they are uneducated they do not have the chance to get influenced by education which may cause hate therefore, they will likely not prepare or support genocide.
